Crowcon wanted to enhance data capture and insights through Crowcon Connect, but needed to know where the design and functionality were falling short first.
Crowcon, a leading manufacturer of gas safety products, asked WMP to carry out a comprehensive usability evaluation of Crowcon Connect to identify and address design and functional issues, as part of an ambitious plan to enhance data capture and insights through the platform.

Our journey began with thorough onboarding sessions, understanding Crowcon's products and the purpose of Crowcon Connect to set a solid foundation for our evaluation. Collaboration with Crowcon's team was essential, so we organised workshops with team members involved in building, managing, supporting or using Crowcon Connect, helping us understand internal perspectives and gather diverse viewpoints.
Understanding real users beyond requirements.
To tailor our recommendations effectively, we needed to understand the target users and their needs. We conducted onsite observational studies and user interviews with representatives from key user groups, giving us invaluable insight into user behaviours and expectations. Analysing customer feedback and anecdotal evidence let us identify common patterns and issues, and pinpoint the areas that needed immediate attention.
Optimising clarity and usability, heuristic by heuristic.
We conducted a heuristic evaluation using Jakob Nielsen's ten usability heuristics to systematically assess Crowcon Connect's interface, covering essential aspects like visibility of system status, consistency, error prevention and reducing cognitive load. Our UI evaluation focused on refining navigation, accessibility and performance across devices, and assessing how clearly data was presented. Users had previously struggled to quickly interpret fleet status, navigate to problematic devices, and take timely action, so we introduced a neutral colour palette with alert-specific colours and replaced static status reporting with an interactive filtering system, making it easier to identify and address critical issues. Action buttons were also made more prominent, with labels added to enhance clarity and streamline user actions.

We reviewed how user data is handled, stored and protected to ensure compliance with data protection regulations, and evaluated secure, user-friendly authentication processes to balance security with usability. Load times were measured and optimised for different sections of the portal to ensure efficient access to information, and we worked to ensure smooth, lag-free interactions, particularly with data-heavy components.
