Designing a doorbell that puts vulnerable users first.

WMP's product design team developed Doro's video doorbell, the Hemma Doorbell, from user-driven concept development through prototyping to design for manufacture, going on to win TechRadar's Choice Award for Best Video Doorbell 2024.

A trusted name in simplicity, entering a new category.

Doro wanted to apply their reputation for simplifying technology to the video doorbell market, with a focus on those who may be more vulnerable at home.

Doro have built their reputation in the telecommunications industry through developing digital products that simplify the user experience. They saw an opportunity to apply that methodology to the digital video doorbell market and create a new product that aims to benefit those who may be more vulnerable at home.

A doorbell designed around real installation and safety needs.

Starting with the pitfalls of existing products.

To understand the pitfalls of existing products on the market, WMP tested other video doorbells and plotted a user journey, identifying concerns with the user experience specifically from the perspective of the target market. The team identified that the parts of the physical experience needing attention were the initial installation, setup and ease of recharging, and developed cost-effective mechanisms to make installing, removing and charging the device simple, along with an intuitive LED interface that conveyed the status of the device.

Building in genuine peace of mind, not just video.

The 'Assist Me' function offers peace of mind for users more vulnerable to unexpected or unwanted visitors, letting the video live feed be redirected to an assigned contact who can answer the doorbell and speak to the visitor on the resident's behalf. If any issues were to arise, an extremely loud siren paired with red flashing lights can be activated remotely to deter unwanted visitors and alert neighbours.

Designing a form that disappears into the doorway.

Having collaborated with Doro for years, WMP has crafted a cohesive design language across the Doro product line. For the Doorbell, the design team ensured the device complements other Doro products while staying visually discreet, especially given its prominent placement at the doorway, with the camera lens, IR array and microphones neatly integrated into a compact, unobtrusive lozenge form.

Prioritising accessibility, while staying discreet.

The doorbell ships with a plug-in Chime device that users can position wherever they'll hear it best, with its compact size and white finish keeping it discreet, and an extra loud speaker, with additional units available to ensure it's heard throughout the home.

Making installation simple.

Being wireless and battery-powered, the installation is much simpler. The battery lasts several months of use, notifying the user via the app when it needs recharging. The simple slide and lock mechanism makes the device quick and easy to release from the mount using a standard screwdriver.

Supporting flexible mounting.

A reversible angled mount lets users face the camera towards either side of the doorway, and an internal SD card slot allows recording data to be saved on-device, making the cloud subscription service an option rather than a necessity.

Creating a slimline package.

WMP collaborated closely with the manufacturer to refine the internal component layout and mechanical features, keeping the visual design compact while achieving an IP65 protection rating.
